Birgit Ludwig (b. Luxembourg) is a filmmaker and photographer based in London.
Her filmic works take the form
of unconventional dramas or experimental documentaries, interweaving realism and a poetic uncanny.
Currently she is working on a feature-length film project set in Palestine.
Her London-set short film 'The Partition' premiered at 'Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin’ and was screened at the British Film Institute (London) and Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), among others.
She has been awarded a bursary from the ‘Centre National de l'Audio-Visuel’ (Luxembourg) for a long-term photographic project in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A selection of the work was awarded in the final competition at the 2023 Sarajevo Photography Festival.
Birgit holds an MA from Kingston University (Experimental Film) and a BA from Central Saint Martins School of Art London (Fine Art / Phoebe Llewellin Smith Scholarship Award).
Her directorial practice has been influenced by her work as an actress with European filmmakers among which the late Jacques Rivette, Alain Raoust and Olivier Babinet. She has directed a stage production of ‘Crave’ by Sarah Kane and collaborated on the performance series ‘Production Lines’ by Antoine Davenne at Gasworks (London). She has also been involved in curatorial projects including a tank.tv moving image Dvd-anthology conceived with artist Laure Prouvost.
