Birgit Ludwig (b. Luxembourg) is a filmmaker and photographer currently based in London.
Her filmic works take the form
of unconventional dramas or experimental documentaries, interweaving realism and a poetic uncanny.
Currently she is intermittently working on a feature-length film project set
in the West Bank, Palestine.
Her London-set short film 'The Partition' premiered at Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin and was screened at the British Film Institute (London) and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), among others.
She was awarded a grant from the Centre National de l'Audio-Visuel for a long-term photographic project in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The series features in a solo show at the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the summer 2025 and was part of the European Month of Photography show ‘Reality Check’ at Konschthal Esch in May-June 2025. A selection of the work was a
finalist at the 2023 Sarajevo Photography Festival.
Birgit holds an MA from Kingston University (Experimental Film / distinction) and a BA from Central Saint Martins School of Art London (Fine Art / Phoebe Llewellin Smith Scholarship Award).
Her directorial practice has been influenced by her work as an actress with European filmmakers among which the late Jacques Rivette, Alain Raoust and Olivier Babinet. She has directed a stage production of ‘Crave’ by Sarah Kane and collaborated on the performance series ‘Production Lines’ by Antoine Davenne at Gasworks (London). She has also been involved in curatorial projects including a tank.tv moving image Dvd-anthology conceived with artist Laure Prouvost.
